Journal Two - Mickey Pfarr

Well, for starters, my name is Michaela Pfarr, but I just go by Mickey; saves everyone the painful struggle of getting the pronunciation right. I'm 21, from Richwood, OH, and a junior here at OSUM, majoring in English with a minor in Creative Writing. I adore reading and writing, but I guess that's evident. I honestly hope to make a career out of my writing; I've accepted the fact that I'll be living on ramen for a while, but I think it would be worth it, considering this is what I've been dreaming of since I was a kid. I love all types of writing, but I think my all-time favorite genre would be fiction - especially fantasy. (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, you get the idea.) I love to travel; I went to Ireland in 2015 and I'm going to France and Italy in 2017. I'm also a bit of a nerd (and by a bit, I mean a LOT). And I have an unhealthy obsession/devotion to my dog.

Not the greatest picture of me, but my dog is cute, so...

All eight of the beliefs in our reading were so important, but I think that number three, "Writing is a process," hit home with me the most. I get writer's block a lot, and mostly because I get frustrated when my first or second draft doesn't come out the way I want it to. However, writing is such a big process that I shouldn't even worry about whether or not my first, second, even third drafts aren't up to par; sometimes the best writing comes unexpectedly, not when you're trying to make the next best seller.

  1. I think that that all writers get writers block but we just have to get through without hurting someone in the process. I agree with what you wrote about the best writing coming unexpectedly.

    1. Oh, totally. It's just the getting through it without hurting someone that poses an issue!

  3. First of all, I'm more of a cat person myself. Second of all, my favorite kind of writing is fiction too. Whether it's Frodo and the ring or Eragon and his dragon, I like fiction a lot.

    1. Cats are evil. I love them. Unfortunately, I'm allergic, and can't be around them for more than a day without becoming completely miserable. I actually never finished the Eragon series... I loved the books, but by the time I got to the very last one, it was unavailable at my local library for almost a year. I guess I just forgot.
Now I need to re-read them all.

  4. First off I'm going to start out b saying that your dog is absolutely adorable. I'm obsessed with dogs and keep trying to convince my landlord to let me have one in my apartment. Second off I think it's cool that you enjoy traveling. I love traveling but the furthest I have been is Hawaii so it's my goal to get out of the country before I graduate. I also agree with your thoughts about writing is a process. I too get frustrated when my writing doesn't come out the way I want it to right away.

    1. Thanks! Her name is Lelouch (lay-loo); she's the clingiest, most lovable little puggle I've ever seen. It's crazy. I strongly suggest getting one if you ever have the chance, the beagle-pug mix is perfect. I've never been to Hawaii, but it's definitely on my list of things to do. I would look for travel options through the university, because most of the time, you get a scholarship. When I went to Ireland, I had about half the trip paid for through a travel abroad scholarship. Totally worth it.

  5. Very adorable puppy! I'm also a huge nerd, no need to be ashamed. Nerds are the coolest! Are you going to Italy and France with OSU? I was thinking about going!

    1. She kind of is the cutest thing ever - really clingy, too. She sits like a person would, sitting upright, about 70% of the time. You should totally go on the trip, as that's how I've been doing most of my traveling. It's gonna be great!

  6. I am extremely jealous that you went to Ireland, that's my dream! Other than that, we sound like the same person! I want to be a writer, even though there may not be money involved. And the fantasy novels! Ahh, I love the two you put! Nerds unite!

    1. Oh, God, was it beautiful. I'm Irish on my mother's side, and it instantly became my home away from home. The people are so nice there as well. I personally believe that making money off your writings doesn't make you a writer, it just makes you a little well more known and more wealthy. You're a writer now! And if you love it, making money off of your work would only be icing on the cake.

  8. I love the Doctor Who shirt that you're wearing! Who is your favorite Doctor? I too have an obsession with my cat Sweetness, but it's really hard not to when she's so cute. :) I also want to be an author, but I don't know exactly what I want to publish or write about. Guess that's something I can figure out along the way.
