Journal 5: Kristen Orewiler

Part One: The part that strikes me as most important and educational in the chapter on non-fiction is the elements of creative nonfiction. The six elements on page 164-165 are important to keep in mind when writing because without them, I ask myself if it really nonfiction? I think the Ethics and Edicts are most important because like the book says, "Sometimes, telling the truth can get you in trouble." I think it was most interesting because I've never thought about it that way. I definitely know when I'm writing to nonfiction to keep that in mind. I think its interesting that there is both moral and legal dimension of creative nonfiction.

Part Two: I read a story called Picture This by Lois Taylor and I thought it was definitely an interesting story to read! I highly recommend it because it's not like an "everyday" nonfiction story. This story is about a women (no name was given) and she bought this beautiful dress for a fancy dinner and it was more of her subconscious that bought the dress because it was something she would never normally buy. She never gave her age but kept saying she wasn't too young but she wasn't too old either. She had seen this guy, Don, from across the room at this fancy club and all the sudden had sudden flashbacks of her life and started picturing images of things that would happen with her and Don and they were images you would've never expected to read. At the end of the story, the man she saw ended up having a wife or a lover. The main theme was so express the author's guilt and regret. I thought this story did a good job taking the audience back into her memories and the reader could feel all of the emotions she was feeling at the time. I also was a big fan of this story because the story starts out great, like you picturing the "perfect life" as you read on, you quickly learn that the life she is explaining is nothing close to being perfect and I think it was important to do so because a lot of stories that we read always has happy endings. If you guys have free time and want an interesting story to read, I highly recommend this one!

  1. I think that writing nonfiction is sometimes a hard thing to do because you have to really decide on the risk that you are willing to take. If you write something about someone that they do not like you could face serious problems. I feel as though as readers of nonfiction we deserve the truth.

  2. Part one: It is hard to wrap your mind around the fact that writing creative nonfiction could possibly get you in legal trouble. Creative writing seems like a medium where you can write anything and everything you want with no rules but when it comes to creative nonfiction, this isn't the case.
On the ethics and moral side, I'm a little conflicted. The chapter said multiple times to always tell the truth even if it might hurt you or make you wince. But if it's not ethical should we hide the truth? I'm not sure.

Part two: The story sounds really interesting! I always love a good ending, even if it's not a happy one. I see the reoccurring theme of regret in a lot of person creative nonfiction stories. Have you noticed this?
