Journal 3 - Devon Beck

There were many ideas that struck me as important in chapters four and three.  One of those ideas was the idea that as a writer you are looking for the words to describe
what you want to say. I think that this is very true, We all have things or ideas that we think that we will know exactly how to word. I don't think though that is always the case. I think that sometimes we need to go and figure out a way to make the words come to us.

On page 38 , Richard Hugo wrote that you should " make your first line interesting and immediate."  I think that this is a very good idea. I think that the first line of a poem or any writing is the line that will make people read. It is the basic foundation of how the story is going to go. The first line should be something that will make the reader want to go on in the story. A dull first line is not a good impression and people may not go beyond that if it isn't good.

Part 2 : When I was writing my own poems I don't really focus on the meters. I don''t really focus on anything for that matter. I go with how I am feeling. I know that this is not always bad but not always good either. I think that reading the book is helping me become more of a better write. Last year I would have not had any idea end stops were or enjambments. I would not have known all the different types of ways you could make a poem. As I write my poems I' m learning that I will make mistakes. I'm learning that sometimes you will end up having to redo what you wrote. I'm learning that the lines that I start with will not always be the lines on the final copy. I'm learning that trying new things is not always bad. When I read the books I get better understanding of how so many little things can matter so much. I never would have thought that  the way that you use verbs or nouns could make things so much different in a poem. I'm learning from the books that there are many different ways to make a poem.

As I write the poems I'm noticing that I need to try to do things differently. I'm realizing that I can not always stick to what I know. I'm seeing that sometimes if I change something I can make it into something that is much more better. A huge struggle is wanting to go back and follow the same routine that I always do.
